NUYORICAN DREAM

With remarkable access to intimate conversations and personal moments, director Laurie Collyer has crafted an engaging documentary about one gay man, Robert Torres, and his Nuyorican family. Robert and his family, all of Puerto Rican heritage and living in New York City, live radically different lives. A successful and ambitious educator, Robert appears to have achieved the "dream" of a better life in the US, one which has eluded his mother and siblings. While his family faces ongoing struggles with addiction, poverty, and crime, Robert grapples with his desire to help and the limitations of what he can do. The result is a moving and insightful film that handles difficult and important issues with the directness and the complexity they deserve.
