RETURN TO GO! (ZURÜCK AUF LOS!)
Schmaltzy East German pop songs carry an unusually poignant message in RETURN TO GO!, a film written and directed by, and starring Pierre Sanoussi-Bliss. Sam (Sanoussi-Bliss) is an aging African-German living in East Berlin. His raison d'etre is to breathe new life into the old popular music of the Eastern Bloc and, in so doing, re-examine his own difficult place in German society. With each song he records, Sam is diverted further from his goal of settling down to a normal life. When he leaves his boyfriend of three years, his circle of friends tightens. But when his ex announces that he is HIV-positive and Sam discovers his own positive status, he undergoes the tests of love and forgiveness with old friends and new lovers. When his new man, Rainer, becomes debilitated in a car accident, Sam ironically finds himself in the role of caregiver. Breezily told and frequently funny, this gay tragicomedy addresses racism, AIDS, friendship, death, disability, and ultimately, the fragile and ephemeral joy of living.
