PARAGRAPH 175
Paragraph 175, a section of the German penal code dating back to the late 19th century, criminalized sexual activity between men. Largely ignored during the jazz-age gay renaissance of Weimar Germany, Paragraph 175 eventually provided the legal justification for the Nazi round-up and extermination of more than 15,000 homosexuals during World War II. Taking its title from the infamous law, this moving documentary, directed by Robert Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, preserves the testimonies of a handful of gay men who survived Hitler's death camps. These frail men, most now in their 90s, summon forth uncommon courage to recall the ghosts of the past, a vibrant culture destroyed, and a generation of young men brutalized and murdered. PARAGRAPH 175 breaks a long silence, adding a crucial new chapter to the history of the Holocaust.
