KING OF THE JUNGLE
It's a jungle out there, and somebody has to be king. In Seth Zvi Rosenfeld's superbly constructed KING OF THE JUNGLE, that someone is Seymour Weinstein (John Leguizamo) - or at least he likes to think so. Seymour does alright for himself in the jungle that is the streets, although his community-activist mom would feel better knowing that Seymour was safe at home. Mona (Julie Carmen) is a remarkable mom who splits her time between looking after Seymour and organizing the neighborhood to (bq)stop the violence.(eq) Both her girlfriend, Joanie (Rosie Perez), and her deadbeat ex-husband, Jack, think Mona's overprotective mothering is keeping Seymour from growing up. When Seymour and Mona are separated by tragedy, Seymour loses control and disappears on the streets. The journey to find Seymour is transformative, especially for Joanie, who is faced with learning how to be a parent. This tense dramatic thriller features an exceptional portrayal of a lesbian mom and a riveting portrait of urban violence.
