TWO BRIDES AND A SCALPEL/PARADISE BENT
These two enlightening and uplifting films show us distinctive celebrations of gender diversity in today's world. TWO BRIDES AND A SCALPEL profiles Linda Fraser and Georgie Scott who were wed as heterosexuals in 1997 and, after Georgie's gender reassignment, became Canada's first legally married same-sex couple. Using footage shot almost entirely by Georgie and Linda (including graphic images of the surgery), this film from director Mark Achbar (NOAM CHOMSKY: MANUFACTURING CONSENT) is a moving account of two brave people being true to themselves and to each other. PARADISE BENT explores the history of the Samoan fa'afafine - boys who identify culturally as girls and who perform important domestic functions in society. Following the lives of several generations of current residents, director Heather Croall shows the progression of fa'afafine tradition, including the influence of the Western drag queen. This entertaining film applauds one culture's respectful integration of individuals occupying a distinctive gender niche.
