This disarmingly sweet story of "a little pig that could" came from nowhere in 1995 and almost toppled Mel Gibsons BRAVEHEART at the Oscars. A story of perseverance, dreams, and, most importantly, an unprejudiced heart, BABE is a glorious modern-day fable that is delightful fun for kids and adults alike. Babe, an orphaned young pig, is rescued from certain pig-doom by Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell), a kindly man of few words, and brought to the Hoggett farm. The lonely little porker is quickly adopted by a nurturing sheepdog, Fly, and brought into the fold of a hilarious cast of memorable critter characters, including paranoid Ferdinand the duck, Maa the matronly ewe, and the hissingly wicked cat Duchess. It doesnt take long for Babe to decide he wants to be just like "mom," and become the first bona fide sheep-herding pig. Full of clever wit and gentle wisdom, BABE is fun for the whole family. BABE; Chris Noonan, director; 1995; USA; 90 minutes; 16mm
