Barbara Hammer, a pioneer of lesbian/feminist experimental film and video art, has made 73 experimental shorts and seven experimental documentaries since 1968. HISTORY LESSONS outdoes them all with its irreverent reconstruction of lesbian film history dating back to the 19th century. Hammer weaves a rich visual essay with a mixture of excavated newsreels: military promotions, vintage stag films, and charming dramatic re-enactments of lesbian angst. The provocative juxtaposition of images and narration with topics ranging from politics to erotica will delight, inform, inspire, enrage, titillate, and amuse audiences. Courageously stepping in to create a visual history of material previously undocumented, Hammer brings us a pre-Stonewall lesbian chronicle with wonderful results.

Plus Short: CABBY. A female cabby's infatuation with a waitress forces her to come to terms with her own sexuality.
