21 Highly anticipated and critically acclaimed, TREMBLING BEFORE G-D tells the stories of Orthodox and Hasidic Jews who identify as gay and lesbian. Orthodox Judaism, one of the most conservative of Jewish traditions, has strict prohibitions against homosexuality, yet the individuals in this film search for ways to reconcile their religious devotion with their sexual identity. Men and women from around the world recount their experiences of suffering through aversion therapy, being disowned by their families, and agreeing to heterosexual marriages to avoid ostracism. The stories are told with frustration, sadness, and, at times, humor. Director Sandi Simcha DuBowski labored for years on this fascinating documentary, and the result is an honest, respectful look at a historically hushed and hidden community, as well as a loving and fearless testament to faith. TREMBLING BEFORE G-D; Sandi Simcha Dubowski, director; 2000; USA; 84 minutes; 35mm
