THE VIOLENT FEMMESTHE VIOLENT FEMMES: A PANEL DISCUSSION ON (FEMININE) GENDER IDENTITY

Over the past few years we've seen a lot of film and video addressing female masculinity and FTM issues, but very little that addresses queer feminine identity. This trend in filmmaking seems to reflect a trend in the queer community -- and we want to talk about it. We wish we had a movie to show you, but in its absence we've put together a great panel discussion.

Enough already about masculinity! Come hear a panel of queer women talk about femininity, femme identity, feminism, and the current state of public dialogue about gender identity. Some of the questions we'll tackle: Why do and don't feminine queers identify as femme? What is "femme" identity when defined on its own terms, not in contrast/comparison to "butch" or "masculine"? How does feminine identity get constructed? How does feminism inform queer femininity? How is a femme dyke different from a "feminine" straight woman? When and how do femmes benefit from heterosexual privilege? What do we make of our community's recent fascination with masculinity, from drag king shows to the overwhelming number of community forums on masculine gender identity? Where is the feminist trans movement?
