ALL IN THE FAMILY: SHORTSFISH AND ELEPHANT (JIN NIAN XIA TIAN)

Wednesday, October 23
5:00pm
Harvard Exit Theatre

Billed as the first-ever lesbian film from mainland China, FISH AND ELEPHANT is a wonderful account of first love. Xiao Qun works as an elephant keeper at the zoo. Her girlfriend, Xiao Ling, is a saleswoman in a clothing store. They meet in secret and slowly their love grows. But Qun’s life is complicated by her mother, who is desperately trying to marry her off. Qun placates her by arranging a succession of dates with eligible bachelors. Meanwhile, the plot thickens when Xiao Qun’s ex-girlfriend, on the lam from the police, shows up and needs her help. Qun harbors the fugitive, struggling to keep the secret from Xiao Ling. Finally, caught in a tangle of lies, Qun comes out to her mother, who then reveals a secret of her own. Working with a cast of mostly amateur actors, director Li Yu creates a genuine, honest and heartwarming story in her feature debut.
