| Exploring the nature, history, and art of masculinity on female-bodied people, Gabriel Baur’s VENUS BOYZ begins by profiling well-known New York City drag kings such as Diane Tor, Dred Gerestant, and Mo B. Dick. With clips from their outrageous and sexually charged acts, filmmaker Baur explores the definition, purpose, experience, and culture of modern day masculine drag, positing the world of drag kings as a backlash to patriarchy, an exploration of masculine eroticism, a means to gain masculine power, and a road to stardom. The film then moves into the world of female-bodied artists and others who take their masculinity outside the world of theatrics into real life-including an introduction to transgender artist Del La Grace Volcano’s explorations of masculinity and femininity in his art. By including a wide range of gender identities, VENUS BOYZ delves into aspects of queer culture on the cutting edge of gender exploration.
