WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT traces the definitive history of Hedwig from her birth in a cloud of glitter to her triumph as a punk rock star of stage and screen. John Cameron Mitchell Jr. was already a successful performer on Broadway, but it was a chance meeting with composer-lyricist Stephen Trask that led to the explosive collaboration that birthed Hedwig and the Angry Inch: the cult club show, the Off-Broadway smash, and finally the acclaimed film. See Hedwig’s very first public appearance at a drag queen open mic, check out the historic theater in the Meat Packing District where the show became a smash, meet some of the throngs of fans that make up the cult of Hedwig, and hear Mitchell, Trask, Miriam "Yitzhak" Shor, former Hedwigs, and a parade of others wax poetic on the surprising crossover appeal of a rock musical about an East German transsexual diva.
