FESTIVAL
GUESTS
The festival is honored to be hosting a number of visiting and local filmmakers.
Throughout the festival, filmgoers will have opportunities to meet and
talk with filmmakers at question-and-answer sessions and at festival receptions
and parties. The following guests will be in Seattle for part or all of
the festival week and interviews may be arranged by contacting the Press
Coordinator.
Sarah
Waters, Author, TIPPING THE VELVET
Welsh-born Sarah Waters has completed three critically acclaimed novels
exploring the lesbian underworld of Victorian England. Waters most recent
book, Fingersmith, has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize and been
nominated for several prominent literary awards. Her first published novel,
Tipping the Velvet, has been adapted for a new BBC production. Work is
already underway to turn the remaining parts of the trilogy into film.
Stephen
Trask, Compser/Lyricist, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY
INCH
Composer and lyricist Stephen Trask has been John Cameron Mitchells
creative partner since HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH was just an idea for
a drag show. Trask steered the development of HEDWIG from storyboard to
Sundance. In the process, Trask has revolutionized the rock opera genre
while bringing transgender and identity issues to film-going audiences.
Harold ONeil, Filmmaker, HAROLDS
HOME MOVIES
For seven decades, Harold Hal ONeal has made short films
documenting the lives of his friends as well as the changing world around
him. The end result is a cinematic time capsule of gay life from the 1940s
to the 1970s. ONeal offers a rare opportunity to witness a first-hand
account of the rise of gay pride in America and the changing face of intolerance.
This sold-out hit of the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is
a powerful and personal history of the queer community.
Christian Taylor, Actor/Co-Director, SHOWBOY
Taylor is a writer and producer of the acclaimed HBO drama SIX FEET UNDER.
His well established Hollywood career -- and his contemplation of what
might have been -- provides the premise for his faux documentary SHOWBOY.
Co-directed by Taylor and Lindy Heymann.
Stewart
Halpern, Director/Producer, WHEN BOYS FLY
As the producer and director of the award-winning documentary MAKING BABIES
THE GAY AND LESBIAN BABY BOOM, Halpern began his love for documentary
filmmaking. His work has been screening at the lesbian and gay film festivals
in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Santa Barbara, and Montreal. In
his spare time, Stewart has worked as the Associate Producer
of the NBC series Veronicas Closet and Bette and is currently working
on the CBS show Ellen, Again.
Christine
J. Russo, Director, SIZE EM UP
Russo was last seen at the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival when
we screened STRAIGHT DOWN THE AISLE: CONFESSIONS OF LESBIAN BRIDESMAIDS.
Russo is an internationally-exhibited film and video artist who has been
involved with imagemaking for the past several years.
Ileana Pietrobruno, Writer/Director, GIRL
KING
Pietrobruno is an award winning filmmaker who has making independent work
for over ten years. She is a filmmaker who writes, produces, and directs
her own films. Her first film, THE SISTERS OF GION, won the Canadian Student
Award for Best Experimental Film and her first feature film CAT SWALLOWS
PARAKEET AND SPEAKS! has fast become an underground hit. Her current work,
GIRL KING, is a comic, erotic pirate adventure.
Several filmmakers have also agreed to make themselves available for phone
interviews. Interviews with Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira (ELVIRAS
HAUNTED HILLS) and Steve Guttenberg (P.S.
YOUR CAT IS DEAD) may be arranged through the Press Coordinator.

Travel back in time with HAROLDS HOME
MOVIES to 1940s San Francisco, 1950s garden parties, and 1970s pride
parades. For seven decades, Harold Hal ONeal has made
short films documenting the lives of his friends as well as the changing
world around him. Were honored to welcome Hal and his partner of
50 years, George, as we present a selection of these amazing and insightful
works from ONeals personal archives. This sold-out hit of
the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is literally a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
This
summer, Seattle experienced THE COCKETTES, a documentary film featuring
San Franciscos notorious theatrical troupe of the psychedelic 60s.
We are proud to contribute to the Cockettes comeback with two groundbreaking
archival films that influenced a queer generation and preserved a moment
of Cockettes history. TRICIAS
WEDDING and ELEVATOR GIRLS IN BONDAGE will entertain, shock, and delight
you with their hilarious wit and outrageous shenanigans. COCKETTES
codirector David Weissman returns to Seattle to host this special event,
along with honored guest, TRICIAS WEDDING director, Sebastian.
Join us for a lively conversation with a select panel of this years
festival filmmakers as we explore the pitfalls and rewards of lesbian
cinema. From writing the story and selling the script, to securing funding
and distribution, THE GREATEST STORIES
NEVER TOLD: QUEER WOMEN FILMMAKERS TALK ABOUT THEIR WORK will examine
the challenges facing queer women trying to get their stories on screen.
