21 is the after-school special you wish ABC had made. Fifteen-year-old Leigh isn’t having the easiest time with her family—her mom has serious money problems, her older brother is a first-class jerk as obsessed with his wrestling weight as he is with tormenting her, and her dad, just back in town and in their lives, is already planning a move to Guam. The one respite from the trials and tribulations of her teenage existence is band class, but her biggest challenge is the upcoming band seat play-offs. Leigh knows that if she loses, she will no longer be able to sit next to her crush, Jen! An evocative portrait of teenage angst, complete with puppy love and a secret diary, Erin Greenwell’s charming directorial debut is tender, funny, sad, and hopeful.
