BROTHER OUTSIDER: THE LIFE OF BAYARD RUSTIN
Experience Music Project: JBL Theater
Saturday, October 18
2:30pm

The little-known force behind the celebrated 1963 March on Washington was a man named Bayard Rustin. A lifelong human rights activist, Rustin synthesized Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance and Martin Luther King’s passionate leadership of the civil rights movement. Unfortunately, the leaders of the movement saw Rustin’s sexual identity as a liability, and he was eventually forced out. A familiar face—though always in the background—he finally receives the honor and recognition he deserves in this inspiring documentary. Beginning with his college days of singing sweetly and working for the Communist Party, and continuing through his amazing contributions to the civil rights movement, BROTHER OUTSIDER chronicles the extraordinary efforts of an openly gay man to make society better for all people—no matter what the personal cost.

Screening with BESSIE, BILLIE, & RUTH, one woman’s rhythmic homage to the godmothers of song.
