In the early 1900s, a new and immediately popular invention (and one of the first uses of the electric motor) promised to solve the “problem” of women’s hysteria. But 70 years later, these “perverted sex toys” were condemned by conservative politicians in states like California and Texas, where legislation outlawed the sale, ownership, or use of vibrators and dildos, while simultaneously criminalizing other “deviant” sexual practices. DILDO DIARIES takes a probing look at the Texas Penal Code and its effects on the adult sex toy industry. With smart and sometimes hilarious interviews with legislators, porn stars, the curator of the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices in Minnesota, sex toy (er… educational model) shop owners, and vagina enthusiast Annie Sprinkle, this film rarely strays far from its sense of the absurd, while honoring the dildo’s fight for legitimacy and underscoring the danger of anti-sodomy laws.
