FIGHT
BACK, FIGHT AIDS: 15 YEARS OF ACT-UP
The
Henry Public Library
Saturday, October 18
2:30pm
The
AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT-UP) was formed in 1987 out
of rage at the inactivity and complacency of the government, the
medical establishment, and the queer community in the face of the
AIDS epidemic. From its humble beginnings in a New York apartment
to die-ins on the White House lawn, ACT-UP became an
international phenomenon, which screamed its call to action at anyone
who wouldnt listen. Director James Wentzy provides an insiders
view of the organization that launched AIDS activism and affected
legal, medical, and social responses to AIDS around the world. It
is the story of a movement full of internal political struggles,
brilliant achievements, and loss of life at every turn. The continuing
AIDS crisis lends relevance to the issuesand the angerportrayed.
