FLAG WARS
Broadway Performance Hall
Tuesday, October 21
7:15pm

What’s wrong with creating a community of your own? In FLAG WARS, filmmakers Linda Goode Bryant and Laura Poitras document the change in a once thriving, predominantly black community in Columbus, Ohio, as gay men and lesbians move in and establish themselves in the neighborhood. The filmmakers succeed in representing the perspectives of all involved in the process—from the gay man who pours all of his time, energy, and limited financial resources into making a showplace of a dilapidated shell of a house; to the terminally ill black woman whose case shows just how such dilapidation can take hold; to the lesbian realtor who seeks to benefit financially from the neighborhood’s transition; to the black artist who insists that his right to self-expression be respected. FLAG WARS provides an unflinching look at the politics of gentrification and the complexity of prejudice on both sides of the fence.
