OF MEN AND GODS /
EVERYTHING MUST COME TO LIGHT
Little Theatre
Wednesday, October 22
5:00pm

OF MEN AND GODS provides a rare glimpse into queer life in Haiti. Prevalent, yet still taboo, homosexuality and gay culture are allowed to flourish within the context of the Vodou religion. In this film, gay men and transgendered women debate the nature of sexual orientation (some believe that they were born gay and others believe that they were called by the gods), and about whether or not married men who sleep with men are “masisi” (gay).

In EVERYTHING MUST COME TO LIGHT, documentary filmmaker Mpumi Njinge introduces us to three South African women called by the (male) ancestors to leave their husbands, take wives, and become traditional healers, or Sangomas. Sangomas hold a highly respected position in the community, using herbs, animal sacrifice, and apothecary skills passed down through the centuries to ward off evil spirits. The film’s depiction of the role of the ancestors in the daily religious lives of these women and their wives is powerful.
