The Complete 2003 Festival Schedule

RISE ABOVE: THE TRIBE 8 DOCUMENTARY
Experience Music Project: JBL Theater
Saturday, October 18
9:00pm

Offering fans and virgins alike a front row seat to “San Francisco’s own all-dyke, all-out, in-your-face … dildo-swingin’, bullshit-detecting, aurally pornographic, Neanderthal-pervert band of patriarchy-smashing snatch-lickers,” RISE ABOVE is filmmaker Tracy Flannigan’s paean to Tribe 8, the first dyke-identified hardcore punk-rock band. Founded in the early ‘90s, Tribe 8 created a space for themselves in music history by unapologetically being who, how, and what they want to be. Weaving archival photographs, personal interviews, and gorgeously shot 16mm live footage, Flannigan captures the band at work and at play. SLGFF audience members will recognize guitarist Silas “Flipper” Howard from the 2002 festival favorite BY HOOK OR BY CROOK. Whether or not you’re a fan of their music, strap-on accoutrements, or radical feminism, you won’t be able to watch this documentary without catching Tribe 8 fever!

Screening with D.I.Y., an IN THE LIFE television program about the organizers of Ladyfest, rocker grrls, and queer-positive women in the music industry.
