SYLVIA SCARLETT
Harvard Exit Theatre
Wednesday, October 22
5:00pm

If you thought Greta Garbo looked good in a suit, wait until you see the late, great Katharine Hepburn in full drag! George Cukor’s 1935 movie is best known from the postcard portraits of a cross-dressing Hepburn displayed on the refrigerators of lesbians everywhere, but the film itself offers a fascinating glimpse of the great actress early in her career. When her mother dies, Sylvia Scarlett (Hepburn) cuts her long locks and transforms herself into “Sylvester” so she can flee with her feckless criminal father to his native England. On the journey they meet Cary Grant (playing against type as a Cockney cad), and, after some comic misadventures, the three of them team up with a chambermaid to form the “Pink Pierrots,” a traveling theater group. As queer as they come and beautifully done, this archival presentation is SLGFF’s tribute to Ms. Hepburn, who died earlier this year.

SYLVIA SCARLETT; George Cukor, director; 1935; USA; 95 minutes; 35mm
