Dorothy
Arzners work is such an inspiring legacy to pass onto young
filmmakers. Her work is so witty, irreverent, so full of unabashed
spirit. WORKING GIRLS deliciously captures those bold, confident,
pre-Code women taking matters into their own hands. - Jodie
Foster
We
are proud to present this newly restored film from the Directed
by Dorothy Arzner touring exhibition. One of Americas
great directors, Arzner brought strong, unconventional women to
the screen and earned a reputation for launching the careers of
up-and-coming actresses: Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, and
Lucille Ball were all cast by Arzner in their breakout roles.
Directed
by Dorothy Arzner was conceived by the UCLA Film and Television
Archive. With the cooperation of Paramount Pictures and Universal
Studios the Archive has preserved Arzners six extant films
for Paramount from nitrate projection prints or acetate positives.
None of the original negatives has survived. Preservation of the
films was made possible with generous support from the David and
Lucile Packard Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts,
the Myra Reinhard Family Foundation, and Jodie Foster.
