Have you ever gone crazy for a sharp-dressed dyke?
Filmmaker Mocha Jean Herrup has, specifically dykes in uniform:
those that make up the Dyke Uniform Corps (DUC). If the threads
of power meet in the military uniform, then the DUC is a force not
to be taken lightly. An elite association for dykes who don military
uniforms in the context of fantasy and S/M play, the DUC’s
rigorous membership process includes training and boot camp before
recruits can wear (let alone use) a pair of military-issue shiny
black boots. This military lifestyle introduces a host of complex
issues about gender, sexuality, and body image – specifically,
the constraints of a female body fitting into a man’s uniform
(there are no skirts or women’s uniforms for this Corps).
Herrup has created a sexy, intelligent, and intriguing documentary
about the daring intersection of fantasy, power, and military culture.
Screening with BUTCH MYSTIQUE:African-American butches
discuss the complexity of gender identity and how it plays out in
their daily lives.
