In 2001, Seattle was introduced to the films of
Harold “Hal” O’Neal. For over 70 years, Hal made
8mm, Super8, 16mm, and video home movies, capturing personal moments
with friends and family, as well as historical events centered around
lively San Francisco. We are proud to reintroduce this remarkable
selection of Hal’s work, complete with newly-added narration
by Hal and his partner of over fifty years, George Torgerson as
they share their stories and memories about this unique footage
of 20th century gay life. Marvel at the bustling City by the Bay,
gaze upon beautiful sailors, witness grim images of Japanese-American
internment camp trains, revel in gay garden parties and private
soirees, peek into the legendary Beige Room, and relive 1970s gay
pride. HAROLD’S HOME MOVIES offers a fascinating and unobstructed
look into queer cinematic history, presenting images rarely seen
and stories seldom told.
In loving memory: Harold T. O’Neal, March 19, 1910 –
