Rainbow Pride/Gay Pioneers

Saturday, October 16, 5:00pm

Celebrating pre-Stonewall activists, GAY PIONEERS profiles the group of brave men and women who organized the first gay civil rights demonstrations in the US from 1965 to 1969. Their stories are outlined using archival footage from demonstrations in New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. First-hand accounts are given by some of these pioneers, including Barbara Gittings, Frank Kameny, Rev. Robert Woods, Nancy Tucket and Jack Nichols. When few would publicly identify as gay, these brave pioneers challenged pervasive homophobia.

RAINBOW PRIDE documents the creation of the gay pride rainbow flag by San Franciscan Gilbert Baker. In 1977, the flag was designed in response to the lack of adequate symbols to portray the multi-faceted nature of sexual minorities. The assassination of Harvey Milk and subsequent White Night riots gave the flag widespread exposure and acceptance. Love it or hate it, the rainbow flag has endured as a symbol of inclusion and self-respect.
