Rebel Without A Cause

Sunday, October 17, 2:00pm

We’re proud to present a rare screening of the 1955 classic, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. The legendary James Dean plays Jim Stark, a misunderstood, conflicted youth who finds sanctuary and purpose with two other outsiders, Judy (Natalie Wood) and Plato (Sal Mineo). Besides Dean’s beauty, which causes many gay men and lesbians to swoon, REBEL has always held a particular resonance for queer audiences: the need to create new families, feelings of being ostracized, and of course Plato’s relationship with Jim, which has often been interpreted as homoerotic (the reported bisexuality of the two intensifying the queer read of their on-screen chemistry). Fifty years ago, a sexual relationship couldn’t have been addressed explicitly, but the film does question definitions of masculinity, exploring the intimate bonds between men in that post-war era.

We are honored to have the film’s screenwriter, Stewart Stern, as our guest to introduce REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE and hold a post-screening discussion about one of the most iconic films in American history. Moderated by Gary Tucker.
