Groundbreaking queer filmmaker Bruce LaBruce’s
(HUSTLER WHITE) collection of short stories titled “JD”
provides the source material for this shockingly gritty new drama
from director John Palmer. On the night of his 18th birthday, suburban
gay boy Cliff (Andre Noble) heads into the city with nothing but
a joint and a skateboard, enjoying a night of drugs and flirtation
with young hustler Butch (Brendan Fehr, TV’s “Roswell”).
What begins as a simple friendship rapidly descends into the world
of prostitution and drug addiction, forcing Cliff through an incredibly
harrowing transition from adolescence to manhood as his life spirals
more deeply into Butch’s seedy world. The talented cast also
includes Sarah Polley (GO, DAWN OF THE DEAD), who co-stars as a
pregnant drug dealer. SUGAR graphically depicts a frighteningly
real underbelly of society, and Fehr’s terrific performance,
like the film, is at once tragic and captivating.
