A riveting and unflinching look at a “world
within a world,” TURNED OUT: SEXUAL ASSAULT BEHIND BARS follows
five inmates inside Alabama’s infamous Limestone penitentiary.
They speak in a surprisingly candid matter-of-fact tone about being
“turned out” into the world of subservient sex. In prison
culture, sex is the gold standard in a well-entrenched bartering
system that includes bags of coffee, chips and cigarettes. Through
this documentary, we learn about elaborate “families”
constructed around the pull of loyalty and debt. The inmates discuss
all aspects of their relationships, which sometimes start out as
part business deal and part friendship, but become something more:
love.
