It was a time when gay men wore tight jeans, lesbians wore flannel, and
gas prices were sky high … in other words, not much different than today.
Thirty years ago, when cinema was taking chances, the queer community
was coming out and coming of age, and the sex, the music, and the fashion
of the era was captured in a variety of films. Our trip down memory lane
starts with the uncut print of THE GARDENER, starring Warhol-superstar
Joe Dallesandro (who appears shirtless for the entire film). Then join
us for SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE BATHS which was actually filmed at the legendary
Continental Baths. The live drag shows and interiors alone are not to
be missed. The next day, you can relive more GAY SEX IN THE 70s, and witness
an incredible collection of photos and ephemera from the New York area.
A gay sex icon is exposed in THAT MAN: PETER BERLIN featuring interviews,
self-portraits and clips from his blue movies. Finally, dress in 70s style
and be a dancing queen with ABBA: THE MOVIE SING ALONG. You know you can
sing all the hits! And you'll feel like you're in the front row of a live
concert when you see the band play on the Cinerama screen.
The queer community is becoming more adept at exploring and discussing
gender issues. The local film LOVE LETTER shows how the Queen Bees have
turned that discourse into an art form. And some individuals simply defy
prescribed gender roles, as seen in the narrative BOTH, and the documentary
THE AGGRESSIVES. The diversity of the transgendered community is apparent
in three very different documentaries: CALL ME MALCOLM takes us on a spirital
quest with an FTM seminary student, 100% WOMAN presents the difficulties
of a transgendered athlete, and 100% HUMAN is a beautifully made festival
gem that shares the experiences of an MTF Norwegian, using diary entries
and musical numbers. Our closing night feature, TRANSAMERICA, wraps up
the festival with a funny, touching, and brilliantly acted story about
transitions that are universal.
