Sooner or later, we all have to come out, come of age and come to our senses. 13-year-old Emerson Thorsen enjoys his “alternative lifestyle” of being home-schooled by his hippie parents in a household where casual nudity and openness about sex is the norm. But when the otherwise brilliant boy starts struggling with math, his parents send him off to public school. The precocious Emerson finds acceptance difficult among his rural Nova Scotia classmates, but his intellect impresses Mr. Grant, a closeted English teacher with a penchant for anonymous sex. When the boy develops a wild crush on his teacher, he pursues it with reckless abandon, causing major consternation for all the adults in his life. A cross-generational coming-of-age story, WHOLE NEW THING is a poignant and funny look at the surprising pleasures that come from unexpected changes.
