Screenwriter's Salon: Boys Don't Cry

Tickets available ONLY at the door

Cinema Seattle Screenwriters Salon presents monthly readings and workshops for local filmmakers and screenwriters. This month we are teaming up with Cinema Seattle to co-present a workshop on soon-to-be released Boys Don't Cry.

Brandon Teena has a secret. None of his peers in Falls City, Nebraska (not even his girl friend) knows his "true identity". When his secret is revealed, his friends' petty prejudices are as well… leading to tragic results. Be warned this is not talk-show fodder - this is a frighteningly true tale.

Indeed, it was the basis for The Brandon Teena Story, a film which played at both the 1998 Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the 1999 Seattle International Film Festival.

About the evening: Representatives of Boys Don't Cry will discuss the process of adapting a true story for the big screen. What liberties does the artist allow herself? What constraints must she acknowledge? Must the linear nature of real-life drama bend to adhere to a classic three-act structure? Must characters be excised or amalgamated to streamline a presentation?

Also scheduled for attendance: The documentarians responsible for The Brandon Teena Story.
