Living With Pride: Ruth C. Ellis @ 100
Yvonne Welbon, director; 1999; USA; 65 minutes; video
Director Yvonne Welbon takes us on an inspiring journey through the past 100 years with the oldest "out" African American lesbian. Born July 23, 1899 in Springfield, Illinois, Ruth C. Ellis is an advocate for senior, African American, and lesbian rights who loves to dance, bowl, and talk about her astonishing life as a "lover of women." The irrepressible Ellis talks openly about being out in the 50's, racial discrimination in the gay community, attending the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, and having sex at 95!
Through reenacted footage, viewers share in the lives of Ruth and her companion of 34 years, Ceciline "Babe" Franklin. Throughout the 40's, 50's, and 60's, Ruth and Babe's home was known as the "Gay Spot," providing an alternative to the bar scene that discriminated against blacks.
Ellis is a living link to the past, and her stories provide insight into the struggles and accomplishments of lesbians throughout the century.
